If your air conditioner was put in before around 2010, there's a good chance it runs on R-22 refrigerant — the stuff most folks still call Freon. That single fact changes how we think about your system, and it's the reason a routine service call on an older unit is worth taking seriously here in Dunnellon and Ocala.
Here's the short version: R-22 has been phased out. Since January 2020, it's no longer produced or imported in the United States. The only R-22 left is what's already sitting in supply. When a bucket of something can't be refilled, the price climbs — and R-22 has. So the same leak that used to be a cheap top-off is now a real expense, and it keeps getting worse each season.
How to Tell If You're Running R-22
You don't have to guess. A few quick ways to find out:
- Check the nameplate. The metal data label on your outdoor condenser lists the refrigerant. Look for "R-22" or "HCFC-22." Newer systems say "R-410A" or "R-454B."
- Check the age. If your outdoor unit is 13+ years old, it's very likely R-22.

Why Service Is More Important on an R-22 System
An R-22 unit that's low on refrigerant isn't just running weak — it's telling you something. Refrigerant doesn't get "used up" in a healthy system. If your charge is low, you have a leak. On a modern R-410A unit, that's a repair conversation. On an old R-22 unit, it's a bigger decision, because every ounce we add costs more and the leak will come back.
