See ice on your AC? Turn it off and read this.
A straight answer to a question we hear all the time.
You walked out to your unit and found a block of ice on the copper line or the indoor coil. In August, in Dunnellon. It feels backwards, but a frozen air conditioner is one of the most common calls we get. Here's the short version: your AC gets its cold from refrigerant moving through the coil. When something throws that balance off, the coil drops below freezing and the moisture in your air turns to frost. The more it runs, the more it ices over, until barely any air comes out of your vents.
First thing to do: shut the system off at the thermostat and switch the fan to "On." Running a frozen unit can burn out the compressor, and that's the most expensive part in the whole system. Letting the fan blow room-temperature air over the coil helps it thaw. Give it a few hours. Then let's talk about what caused it.
The usual suspects behind a frozen coil
Almost every frozen AC comes down to one of two things: not enough air moving across the coil, or not enough refrigerant in the system. Both drop the coil temperature past freezing.
- Dirty air filter. This is trusted. A clogged filter starves the coil of airflow. In our sandy, dusty Central Florida homes, filters load up fast. If yours is gray and matted, that's likely your answer.
- Closed or blocked vents. Furniture over a return, too many supply registers shut, or a collapsed flex duct all choke airflow the same way a dirty filter does.
- Dirty evaporator coil. Even with a clean filter, years of dust and biofilm can insulate the coil so it can't shed heat. Then it freezes.
- Low refrigerant / a leak. If your system is low on refrigerant, the pressure drops and the coil runs cold enough to ice up. Low charge almost always means a leak somewhere — refrigerant doesn't get "used up."
- Failing blower motor. If the fan is spinning slow or not at all, air stops moving and the coil freezes.
- Running the AC on a cool night. When outdoor temps dip into the 50s or low 60s, an AC not built for it can freeze. We do get those nights here in winter.
What you can check yourself
Before you call anyone, run through these. A lot of freeze-ups are a five-minute fix:
- Change the filter. If it's dirty, swap it. Then let the coil fully thaw before you turn cooling back on.
- Open your vents and returns. Make sure nothing is blocking airflow — rugs, boxes, a couch pushed against a return grille.
- Check the outdoor unit. Clear away grass clippings, leaves, and mulch. The outside coil needs to breathe.
- Let it thaw completely. Don't rush it. Turning cooling back on with ice still on the coil just refreezes it.
Once it's thawed and the filter's fresh, run it and watch. If it ices up again, the problem is deeper — usually refrigerant, the coil itself, or the blower. That's where we come in.
When it's time to call us
Call us if the unit freezes up again after a filter change, if you hear the outdoor unit hissing or bubbling, if you see oily residue near the copper lines, or if the airflow is weak even when the coil is clear. Those point to a refrigerant leak or a mechanical problem, and those need gauges, leak detection, and a licensed tech — not guesswork.

We find the actual cause instead of just topping off refrigerant and leaving. Topping off a leaking system is a temporary patch that costs you again next month. We'd rather fix it right the first time and tell you straight what it'll take.
Why frozen coils happen so often in our area
Central Florida runs your AC hard — long cooling seasons, heavy humidity, and fine sand and pollen that clog filters and coils quicker than most places. In Dunnellon, Ocala, Beverly Hills, Citrus Springs, and around The Villages, we see systems working nine, ten months a year. That's a lot of runtime for dust to build up and for small refrigerant leaks to slowly drop your charge until the coil ices. Staying ahead of it with a filter you actually change and a yearly tune-up keeps most freeze-ups from ever starting.
